Let’s face it: Social media is more than just the buzzword of the moment. Alexa, the traffic ranking Web information company, highlights the top 10 most used websites. Fifty percent of them are social media sites, with Facebook landing in the number-two spot (Google is number one). Others on the list include Youtube at number three and Twitter at number 10.
By nature, humans are social offline. That doesn’t seem to change once we get in front of a computer. But what does it have to do with business? Many still see social media as a toy for teenagers; others have discovered that it’s not but are uncertain as to how to engage. Network Solutions highlights something interesting about business and social media in the fourth wave of their Small Business Success Index (SBSI) study.
In June of this year, Network Solutions worked with the Center for Excellence in Service at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business to survey 500 small business owners by telephone. They measured the companies’ business competitiveness and discovered that the overall health of small business among this group is a C minus, a drop from a C just six months ago. In fact, the 25 percent of businesses surveyed that saw themselves as highly competitive six months ago has slipped to only 18 percent. These entrepreneurs have less time and resources to develop their employees, consistently maintain their original standard of innovation and compete at the level that they are used to. Yet they remain all-stars at customer service and its ability to gain repeat customers.
Only 24 percent of the surveyed businesses use social media, and the ones who use it well stand out. Their primary goals include:
These small business owners are finding that the first two goals are happening faster and that they break even financially in their online efforts. However, in the next 12 months, these diligent social media users expect to obtain a profit from their online networking efforts. I’m sure Network Solutions will keep us posted.
