Free Conference on Government Contracting in Dallas

Victory in Procurement - government contractingIf you’ve ever wondered whether government contracting is right for your business — or you’re already in government contacting and want to make networking connections and learn more about finding government opportunities — then next week’s Victory in Procurement event in Dallas, Texas is worth checking out.

It’s a free event. It will be on October 18, 2011 from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, at the Marriott Dallas City Center. I’m going to be there — I hope to see you there.

The Victory in Procurement events are like a traveling show that visits cities throughout the U.S..  Over the past year I’ve attended several, including one in Los Angeles last month.  American Express OPEN (a long time sponsor here) produces the events, and asks me to attend to cover the action via social media and through blog articles.

There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a complete novice or already have some experience in government contracting.  Concurrent sessions catering to both levels of knowledge.  Topics include:

  • Government Contracting 101
  • Getting on the GSA Schedule
  • Leveraging certifications for a competitive edge
  • Researching the right opportunities
  • Developing effective teaming relationships
  • Creating a powerful capabilities statement to pitch successfully

There are buyer/seller matchmaking sessions.  SCORE counselors are on hand for business counseling sessions, too.

The speakers are always excellent.  The Dallas event will feature Mark Oliver from the U.S. Department of Interior, and Joe Jordan from the Small Business Administration.

Although the event is complimentary, you must register in advance at Vipgovtcontracting.com.  Don’t wait!

Your SXSW agenda (or any conference, for that matter)

It costs a ton of time and money to go to something like SXSW. Other than having a blast, why go?

Here’s an interesting way to think about it, something I’ve used to change the way I attend events (I don’t do many, and won’t be there, so have fun without me):

Think back a year ago to the last time you went. What do you remember?

Do you remember the presentations that were later on videotape? Do you remember the special screenings of movies? Do you remember the crowded cocktail parties? Bumping into a net celebrity?  I don’t.

So I don’t do them. At the last TED, I didn’t attend a single session. They’re fabulous, but I can always watch them later, on video.

Instead, I focus on what I do remember: the engaged conversations. The one on one discussions of what someone is working on. Helping a friend design a book cover or solve a thorny entrepreneurial problem. Sneaking out to go to a taco stand for lunch with a very cool CEO…

These are the reasons it is worth going. (At least for me). So do more of that, I think.

This isn’t easy to do. Most conferences are organized around mass, not around individual interactions that last. It takes an effort to seek out conversations that matter.

Will people miss you if you don’t show up next year? Why?

BlueGlass Internet Marketing Conference: Will You Be There?

BlueGlass FL 2010 ConferenceA few months ago I started hearing about an event called BlueGlass.  That’s an unusual name, so I wanted to know more about it.

Turns out, BlueGlass is the name of an online marketing agency, and also the conferences they host — conferences that cover search marketing, social media, and entrepreneurship.

The next BlueGlass conference is coming up in early November in Hollywood, Florida.  I’m going to try to make it, and hope to see you there, too.

It looks to be an informative and dynamic event, with well-known speakers, such as Peter Shankman the founder of Help A Reporter Out, HARO.com, and Brian Clark, the founder of CopyBlogger.com.

There will be sessions on:

  • online public relations
  • how to buy and sell Web companies
  • investing in domain names
  • online reputation management
  • viral marketing
  • link building
  • and more…
