I was on the phone recently with yet another marketing expert promoting yet another marketing seminar. Considering that this expert’s website gave me a big error message when I logged in, I was curious to find out more about this marketing genius whose seminar was titled, “How to Market Your Business.”

I was on the phone with this individual and when I mentioned the website issue, it was quickly shrugged off and they immediately launched into sales mode on the seminar. As this individual chattered away, I decided to conduct a search online for their name. Low and behold, three of the first four listings that come up were for an essential oils distributor. That was interesting. Also interesting to note was the fact that the only top 10 post that related to this individual was their LinkedIn profile.
It took me exactly 30 seconds to dismiss their credibility. And I felt sorry for anyone paying the $30 bucks to attend the seminar without doing a search first.
In 2005, I coined a term for this. I call it “G-cred,” which amounts to Google credibility. And you don’t need to be a marketing expert to pay attention to this. In 2009, Execunet reported that 86% of job recruiters relied on Internet searches to learn more about their job candidates. Today, that number is probably in the mid-90’s.
No one can afford bad “G-cred.”
When I talk to people about it and they say, in a resigned way, “My name is Mary Clark. There’s a gazillion people with that name.” Does that mean that people won’t ever be doing a search on your name? It’s actually more of a reason to work on your G-cred. After all, do you really want the shoplifter Mary Clark, or the stripper Mary Clark, to precede you – the Mary Clark?
There are many ways to begin improving your G-cred. It’s called online content creation which simply means creating online content that, in some way, is associated with you in a positive way. It can be in the form of blog posts, online articles, presentations, memberships, press, videos, pictures, and social media channels like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, MeetUp, and Pinterest.
The best, and easiest place to start is LinkedIn. If you haven’t done so already, set up your LinkedIn profile and make sure you’ve filled it out completely. There are many tutorials to explain how to do that. Then follow suit with others. If you enjoy writing, starting a blog is easier (and cheaper) than ever. That will help your G-cred in a big way. If you do, just make sure you write about the kind of things that you want to be identified with.
Start with these simple actions and before you know it you’ll have yourself some decent G-Cred – even if your name is Mary Clark.

How to Run an Engaging Poll on Google Plus
This content from: Duct Tape Marketing
Quick tip for Google+ users to start off your week. I got this from Guy Kawasaki, who said he got it from someone else, so I’m not sure who gets ultimate credit. Look for my full interview with Guy this week as we talk about his new book – What the Plus – I’ll also have free copies for my reader.
Running polls and asking your followers questions are proven ways to increase engagement and turn up some handy research. Currently, there is no 3rd Party app that makes this an easy task on Google+, but with a little ingenuity, you can create very engaging polls.
Using comments to create a poll on Google+
You start by creating a question and then creating the answers as comments. Once you create all the comments/answers you want you simply turn off comments so no one can to the answers and instruct readers to +1 the answer they want to choose.

I don’t know a single small business owner not actively looking for ways to get more from their SEO. We want trusted information focused on the areas we’re not always too sure about like… search ads. Or how to decipher Google Analytics. Let’s face it, as SMBs we’re pretty swamped. We don’t always have the time or resources to learn about everything. Instead, we want to know what we need to know and we only want to take in information we can trust. And that’s exactly why SMBs may be interested in checking out the Learn with Google Webinars happening all this month.
Yesterday morning Google announced its new Learn with Google Webinar program which is designed to share best practices across a variety of topics like paid search, mobile ads, display ads, YouTube and Google Analytics. Eight webinars were formally announced, all taking place during the month of March.

What topics can you expect tips on from Google?
Video.
Search ads.
Google Analytics.
Mobile.
More advertising.
Yup, looks like all of the core areas that Google has been stressing that SMBs get more involved with in order to help grow their online presence. If you’re a small business owner just starting to get your feet wet (or finally not ignoring) any of these important areas, you may want to sit in on these free webinars and get some best practice advice from Google.
Also worth noting is Google’s new webinar page which not only lets you register for the webinars listed above, but let’s you access previous webinars that you probably didn’t even know existed. Many of these Google webinars are targeted toward setting up and smartly using Google Analytics, which is pretty vital. If you’re feeling 100 percent comfortable in this area, you’ll definitely want to check these out.
To make things even simpler, Google is allowing SMBs to download it’s Learn with Google Webinar calendar to be automatically notified of upcoming webinars via Google Calendar. Wasn’t that nice of them?
I think it’s really great for Google to these types of resources for small business owners to take advantage of. You’ll almost always want to go beyond what Google is telling you and experiment on your own, but if you don’t even know where to start or how to get going (and many of us don’t) these types of programs are just the jump start we need.

Back in May we told you about Google Business Photos, an effort by Google to pair small business owners up with professional photographers to take high-quality images of their business for their Google Places profile. At the time the program was only available in select cities so we encouraged SMBs not to wait for Google and to take their own photos. Today we tell you that if you didn’t listen to us, you’re in luck because Google just made the whole program self-service. So if you do want a professional photographer to come take photos of your business, here’s your chance.

Because of the success of the original pilot, Google has created a new Business Photos Web site so that small business owners can find a “trust photographer” in their area. SMBs can get started by finding a photographer from Google’s list and then both parties work out a time and price on their own. Within days your photos will then be available on Google’s properties. Google has essentially taken itself out of the equation and is now playing match-matcher between SMBs and photographers.
A few things worth noting about the program:
In its FAQ, Google does disclose that these photos may be used outside of just your Google Places profile, including possible Google Maps integration. By allowing a Google “trusted photographer” to take your business photos, you license the photos to Google to use. This probably isn’t an issue for most SMBs who want their photos out there, but something to keep in mind for certain businesses. If you want full rights to your pictures, you may want to hire your own photographer and not go through Google.
Something else to keep in mind is you won’t have the ability to review the photos before they go live on your Google Place page. Again, from the Google FAQ:
Because of the technology takes individual unstitched and unreviewed images that need considerable processing after they are uploaded by the photographer, to produce the attractive ‘walk- through’ experience, you will not be able to review the images before they are uploaded to Google.
However, if you find a major issue, you can ask Google to blur some areas of the panoramic images. You can also ask to have all panoramas removed, but they’re unable to take down individual ones, which may be a bummer.
Months after our original post, I still think small business owners are better off finding their own photographer rather than looping Google into the process. By doing your own legwork you can potentially find a photographer you can barter services with (allowing you to get the photos for free) and you get full control over how many photos are taken, which are used, and how they’re used. Maybe I’m just paranoid but I don’t see the value of bringing Google into the equation.
However, if you’re interested, Trusted Photographers is currently available in 14 US cities (Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Francisco/Bay Area, Seattle and Washington, DC.), as well as in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and France.
Happy photo taking.
