Join Small Business Trends at BlogWorld

See you at BlogWorld later this week (November 3-5, 2011)?  If you’re going, let’s be sure to connect.  We’re maintaining a fluid schedule this year — visiting with peeps we know, walking the Exhibit hall and best of all — a book signing!

Yes, I will be signing my new book, Visual Marketing at the Wiley Booth at BlogWorld on Friday.  Susan Payton, who is one of the Small Business Trends Experts, will be with me.  Susan was a huge help last winter as I was writing the book along with my co-author, David Langton.  In fact, if it weren’t for Susan’s technical editing, it would have taken a lot longer!  Luckily, though, it’s done and out — and it looks awesome (of course, I am biased!).

So come on over and say “hi” at the Wiley Booth at BlogWorld, from 1:00 – 1:30pm on Friday, November 4th.

Visual Marketing book signing!

While we’re there, we’re also going to spend some time with Nellie Akalp at the Corpnet.com booth #405.  I met Nellie at last year’s BlogWorld.  We started talking, and that led to Nellie coming on board as an Expert contributor (check out Nellie’s posts).  When you stop by her booth, be sure to tell her Anita sent you.  ;-)

Finally, I use opportunities like BlogWorld to meet new people and talk with those who’d like to guest post on SmallBizTrends.com.  If you’d like to connect up, just tweet me or DM me at @SmallBizTrends on Twitter.  We’ll have some of our popular BizSugar tote bags with us, too, for all you BizSugar fans.

PS, if you haven’t made up your mind to attend, there’s still time.  Use this code at registration and get 20% off:  SBTR20.

How to Join the Influencer Club

There’s no doubt that if you can find a way to influence the top influencers in your industry, you are on your way to becoming an influencer yourself–in other words, finding your way into the secret club. But it’s not easy. Here are some tips for finding your way into the ranks of the top influencers in your niche.

Be Remarkable
If you want to be remarkable, you have to do something remarkable. Look at all the influencers in your industry and you’ll see the same thing. These are people or businesses that have done something that makes a difference, or gets attention, or really makes a mark. You simply cannot become an influencer without doing something remarkable. Other influencers know what it took to get to their position, and they are looking for new members of the club who understand that they need to do the same thing. Unfortunately, doing something remarkable requires effort and a lot of hard work. If you can’t do that, you’re out before you were even considered. Get to work.

cheerleader

Be Consistently Remarkable
It’s not enough to be remarkable just once. Top influencers take it to the next level and do it over and over again, on multiple levels. Anyone can get lucky one time. Influencers know that and want to see you perform consistently. The point is, once you wow the world, be prepared to do it again.

Be Better
You know how you get respect from your peers? You become better than they are. Influencers aren’t going to let anyone into the club for just being good. They get pitched 1,000 times a day with “good” concepts. They want exceptional, not “good.” They want people to wow them and who are potentially better than them.

Be Humble
If you walk into a room full of people and start talking about how you’re the greatest that ever lived, you’re probably not going to get much respect. You have to earn respect from influencers. The only way to do that is to come into it with a humble attitude. Tip: It’s always better to let your fans and customers who love you talk you up, instead of doing it yourself. If you’re doing something remarkable, that won’t be a problem. The top influencers in your niche will be watching and listening.

Be a Cheerleader
Nobody likes an ass-kisser, true. But if you want to get the attention of a top influencer in your space, you should spend a certain amount of time focusing on promoting that person’s projects and information. Comment on their blog consistently, and intelligently. Retweeet their tweets. Share them on Facebook, and Google + them. They’re paying attention, believe me.

Be Ready for the Spotlight
You’ve made it into the club! Congrats! Are you ready for it? You’re now one of the influencers in your niche. This means that you’ll now get contacted multiple times a day from people who want to “pick your brain,”  want you to mentor them, or want you to promote their idea. If you don’t come up with a kind way to help them, they’ll call you a jerk and blast you on social media.

It also means that you can now raise your consulting and speaking rates. You can garner a book deal just from your clout. You can launch a new product, or service and sell it easily without having to convince people to buy it. Get to work. The influencer club is ready for you. Are you ready for it?

Don’t forget to head on over to the Small Biz Trends Influencer awards and vote for your top influencers.

Join Us For A Chat on Twitter – #BBSMBchat

Have you ever participated in a chat on Twitter.com?  If you have, you know that Twitter chats can be a rewarding way to share ideas — and also make new connections on Twitter.  And if haven’t participated in one, this is your opportunity.

On Monday, July 25th, Ramon Ray of SmallBizTechnology.com and I will be answering questions online at Twitter for an hour, between 7 and 8 pm Eastern time (same time zone as New York).

This chat is hosted by BlackBerry, meaning that the BlackBerry team will be moderating and asking questions.

This particular Twitter chat is helping spread the word about the Small Business Influencer awards we are producing, of which BlackBerry is the premiere sponsor.  Voting is going on right now with the Influencer awards.  As of today, we have surpassed 40,000 votes for 520 nominees (woo-hoo!)  with another 20 days still to go.

Twitter has figured heavily in the awards.  A lot of social activity to encourage voting is taking place on Twitter.  So it seemed like a perfect fit to have a Twitter chat, where we discuss issues of interest to small businesses.

We also hope to have some of the Judges (and nominees!) from the Small Business Influencer awards join us in the chat.

Most of all, we invite YOU to weigh in, too.  The best Twitter chats, in my opinion, are the ones where lots of small biz owners and entrepreneurs jump right in sharing their own tips, advice and input.  Lots of participation makes the best Twitter chats — so don’t be shy!  EVERYBODY is a “speaker” in a Twitter chat.

The @BlackBerry4Biz team (official BlackBerry small business Twitter account) has put together the following details about the chat:

The BlackBerry for Business Small Business Chat will be a unique opportunity to share stories, swap advice, and network with other small business owners. It will focus on the issues that small business owners face, how they stay current in an ever-evolving world of technology, and what inspires them to succeed.

If you’ve never participated in a Twitter chat, don’t fear! We’ve put together a “How To” guide and a few suggestions for best practices:

What is a Twitter chat?

A Twitter chat is an online conversation that takes place among a group of people on Twitter about a specific topic of interest. A hashtag, created by adding the # symbol to the beginning of any word, is used to keep track of the conversation. In this case, we’ll be discussing small to medium business related topics with business owners, and the hashtag we will use to track the discussion is #BBSMBchat. You’ll need a Twitter account to participate. If you don’t have one, you can sign up at Twitter.com.

How do I participate?

We’ll be asking a list of questions from our @BlackBerry4Biz Twitter handle. Our guests of honor, judges of the 2011 Small Business Influencer Awards and small business experts Anita Campbell and Ramon Ray, will be there to answer questions and help guide the conversation – but it’s up to you, the participants, to really get the chat going. Answer any of the questions that motivate you. If you have an opinion, a story, or advice, we want to hear from you! Twitter chats can become a great source of knowledge when people like you share their experiences.

Choosing the Right Tool to Track the Chat

You may want to choose a tool to help you keep track of the chat all in one stream. We recommend using TweetChat, and have set up a page to track our dialogue:  http://tweetchat.com/room/BBSMBchat. From this site, you will see the real time conversation of all tweets with #BBSMBchat. If you are logged in with your personal Twitter account, you will also be able to post all of your tweets directly from the site. Another way to track the chat is by searching #BBSMBchat in the search bar at the top of the Twitter homepage.

Best Practices

Before the chat:

Make sure to follow the host, @BlackBerry4Biz, since we’ll be asking most of the questions that you don’t want to miss!

For this chat, we have two guests of honor, Anita Campbell (@smallbiztrends) and Ramon Ray (@ramonray). You’ll want to follow them too since they’ll be sharing their expertise about small & medium businesses.

Feel free to join and leave the chat at any time you’d like! Don’t worry if you’ll be a little late, or need to leave early. Join at your own convenience, we’re happy just to see one tweet from you!

During the chat:

Make sure you use the hashtag #BBSMBchat in all of your tweets. That is how others will know that you are participating in the chat, and it will also allow your tweets to be aggregated into the chat stream.
We will be asking designated questions throughout the chat. Our questions will start with a “Q” and the question number. Question one, for example, will start with “Q1”. Our questions will also be IN ALL CAPS, so that they are easily distinguished from other tweets in your stream.

Remember that tweets are only 140 characters. If it seems a little difficult at first, don’t worry – all participants are condensing their thoughts too.

Remember — the hashtag to follow for the chat is #BBSMBchat.  Look forward to “seeing” you on Twitter on July 25th!  Mark your calendar now so you don’t forget.

How Not to Join Facebook’s Walking Dead

Last week over at All Facebook, Brian Carter posted: Shocker 3% to 7.5% of Fans See Your Page’s Post, which was a wakeup call to many of us that perhaps our Facebook pages weren’t getting quite as many eyes as we had originally thought. Even more surprising was that, based on the data compiled by PageLever, the more fans you have, the less likely it is that your content is reaching your audience. What is going on?

EdgeRank is what’s going on.

EdgeRank is the algorithm that Facebook uses to determine which posts a user should see in his/her news feed. It’s influenced by the freshness of the content, engagement with the content (liking or commenting) and how strong the connection is between the brand and the user. The more interactions a particular user has with your brand, the more likely it is that your content will appear in their News Feed and that they’ll see it. This means, of course, that it’s not simply good enough to create a Facebook Brand page for your business. You must create content that users want to engage with. Otherwise, you’re wasting time posting content to an empty room.

Below are some tips to keep your brand active so you avoid becoming part of Facebook’s walking dead.

Craft Engaging Status Updates

You know how important your Status Update is. It’s pretty much your gateway for interacting with fans, but just because you’re posting something doesn’t mean it’s being seen. As noted above, EdgeRank is what determines whether or not a user will be exposed to what you’re putting out. That means to help your chances, you need to create content that is intended for interaction.

Use your Facebook Status to:

  • Ask questions
  • Hold informal polls
  • Get feedback
  • Encourage people to “Like” the update if they agree with a particular statement or to discuss why don’t.

The more you can encourage people to comment, Like or interact with your update, the greater your chance that Facebook will put the update on their friends’ news feed, exposing new people to your brand.

Use the Facebook Questions Feature

When using your update to ask your community a question, don’t just type the question into your Status and hit enter. Instead, use the Facebook Questions option that’s located above your status bar to help you post that content. Because of how these Questions are distributed through the site, your question will actually receive more exposure and prominence than if you just posted the question directly into the status bar. Facebook allows you to easily ask true/false, multiple choice or open-ended questions, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get creative.

Use Photo and Video Content

Because of the viral nature of Facebook, media content such as photos, videos and audio tend to do very well. People like to share this content, and the more they share and Like it, the greater the brand karma you’re going to create. Take a look at your brand and ask yourself what kind of media you have that you can share on Facebook. Maybe you have photos of the new line of cakes you’re experimenting with, video from your last company picnic or holiday party, or audio interviews that you’ve shared in newsletters or on-site. If you do, consider putting this material on Facebook, and encourage people to share it. And if you don’t yet have it, consider investing in creating it – either as Facebook exclusive content or content for your website.

Worth noting: Now that Facebook has given photos more real estate on your profile page, it’s even more important to provide something that is eye-catching and will pique interest in your page. If you have a lot of interesting images, you can use the Facebook Profile Banner to customize your photo strip.

Host Relevant Contests

Another great way to create buzz around your Brand page and keep users engaged with it is to hold contests via Facebook. Contests can keep old fans engaged by giving them something to interact with and a reason to re-visit your page, while also helping to attract new fans at the same time. When running Facebook contests, however, do your best to make the contest as targeted to your brand as possible; otherwise, you run the risk of shooting yourself in the foot.

For example, by running a contest that is too broad (“Like this page and win an iPad!”), you may get a lot of people to Like your page, but they’re not people who are interested in what you have to offer and they won’t engage with future posts. The result of this, of course, is a low EdgeRank score over time as a result of untargeted eyes. While Facebook contests can be a great way to attract eyes and ignite buzz, it’s the targeted contests that work the best in the long run.

Bonus: Get Smart About Targeting

One of the neat things about Facebook marketing is the power of the targeting that’s allotted to you. Knowing that part of your EdgeRank score has to do with engagement, you want to make sure that you’re customizing your messages for a particular audience as often as you can so that only the group that’s relevant to the message actually sees it.

For example, did you know that Facebook allows you to choose which audience you want to display certain messages to? Maybe you own a local chain of bakeries with storefronts in several different cities in Michigan. Do you have a special that’s only being run in one particular location? Or maybe you have a cupcake truck that’s circling the town and you only want the people within that area to see that? By clicking the small lock icon below the Status bar, you can opt to have Facebook show that update only to the people who can benefit from the offer.

By creating targeted messages for a small subset of fans, you help increase your engagement percentage.

If you’re not working to keep your fans engaged with your page on a regular basis, chances are you’re not being seen and you’re wasting a great opportunity.

Join Us at Make Mine a Million (M3 1000) In Denver

On Monday, April 4, 2011, please join Small Business Trends at the  Make Mine a Million – M3 1000 Conference.  The day promises to be a combination of educational sessions, inspiring keynotes, along with the opportunity for 250 women business owners to “pitch” their businesses.

Pitch sessions

Ready to be one of the 250 women to pitch and compete for prizes at the next M3 1000 event?  Meet the criteria and pitch your business for a chance to “make yours a million.”  That phrase stands for getting your small business to the $1 Million per year mark.

This event is designed for businesses with current revenues between  $85,000 – $700,000, that are ready to grow your business to a million dollars within the next 18-36 months.

Note:  you can also attend without pitching your business.

Educational sessions

In addition to pitch opportunities, this event also includes speakers and breakout educational sessions.  Lisa Price, Founder and CEO of Carol’s Daughter, the maker of natural haircare products, will deliver a keynote.

American Express OPEN, our long time sponsor, has asked me to attend to cover the action at the event, and also to share some of my knowledge about using social media to grow a  business.  I will be holding 4 breakout sessions on how to develop expert status and promote your business using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others.

This kind of event can be inspiring to women business owners committed to growing their businesses.  The $1 Million mark in annual revenues continues to be a kind of glass ceiling for many women business owners.  Their businesses grow but may stall before they reach 7 figures in annaual revenues.  That’s why education and inspiration are so critical.

If you attend, please stop by and say “hello.”  I always love to hear from you and meet when I’m traveling to other cities.    Register here.

Join Me For: Choosing the RIGHT Online Software

These days, more and more small businesses and entrepreneurs are jumping on the “cloud bandwagon.”  And why shouldn’t they? After all, there are several advantages in doing so.   Just think about it. . .  speed of implementation; ability to scale the business despite lacking internal tech expertise; lower costs; relief from tech headaches enabling you to concentrate on strategy and core competencies; and, arguably, fewer security issues you have to worry about.

Those advantages were explored in a webinar I presented on March 9, 2011 titled,  “In the Cloud:  5 Reasons to Move to Online Software.” In that webinar, I polled those participating and was pleased to learn that almost 80% are already using cloud apps in the form of online banking.  Significant percentages were using other online software services.  In short, the small biz folk attending seemed to be receptive to online software.

Choosing the RIGHT Online Software In the CloudWith that in mind, I am delighted to continue the discussion about cloud computing and software as a service (SaaS).  On Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 2:00 pm EST (New York time), I am going to be delving even deeper into this topic in a webinar I’m presenting for the Verizon Small Business Center, called “How to Choose the RIGHT Online Software.”  The information will include:

  • ReliabilityIs the vendor reliable as a “partner” of sorts?
  • CostHave you considered “total cost of ownership?”
  • SupportWill the support provided meet your needs?
  • IntegrationWill the App work with existing software?
  • SecurityWill you be more secure (or less) in the cloud?

Join me there:

WHEN: 2PM EST (New York time)

WHERE: Register here and join me, it’s FREE.  (P.S.  If you can’t make the live webinar, no problem.  It will be taped and archived and you can watch the replay.)
