Starting a business has never been easier. The Internet and host of free and low cost apps mean that pretty much anyone can start something for very little money.

Of course, just because you can start a business may not be the best reason to do so.

My guest for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast is Carrie Wilkerson, otherwise known to many as The Barefoot Executive. Wilkerson recently captured years of knowledge in building her own business and that of the many would be, aspiring and thriving small business owners she consults in the appropriately named book The Barefoot Executive: The Ultimate Guide for Being Your Own Boss and Achieving Financial Freedom

Wilkerson shares a bit of her personal story of feast and failure and wanting to find a way to be with her kids while creating a business, but this book is more than her story, it’s a road map of what to do and what not to put together with lots of hard work.

You can listen to the show by subscribing the feed in iTunes or a variety of other free services such as Google Listen (Use this RSS feed) or you can buy the Duct Tape Marketing iPhone app. (iTunes link – Cost is $2.99) or

Is ICANN Starting an Unnecessary Domain War?

We’ve become accustomed to websites ending in .com for some time now. Other gTLDs, which stands for “generic top level domains,” have peeked their heads out, like .org, .edu, .mil and .biz. But a new initiative from ICANN, the not-for-profit corporation that manages Internet Protocol address spaces, may mean that we see a deluge of new gTLDs.

The organization is opening the floodgates for organizations to apply for new gTLDs. That means we will see more than the existing 22 top level domains, and may see websites using “.luxury,” “.brand,” “.whatever.” ICANN is encouraging businesses with deep pockets (the application costs $185,000) to create the next “.thing.”

Why Would Anyone Want Their Own gTLD?

ICANN’s introduction video explains that creating your own gTLD can provide a business opportunity for you (you can then sell URLs to others, the way a domain registration site like Network Solutions does), or you can control your brand by creating a gTLD relating to your company name.  (Hmm, maybe I should look at “.egg” for my own brand!)

Applying for your own gTLD is a costly and lengthy process. Once companies apply, ICANN researches the application, and it can take about a year before it’s approved. If anyone objects to you registering a particular gTLD, they can do so formally, which could present a knot in the process.

My understanding is: If your competitor doesn’t want you to get the gTLD, they can stop you. Not sure how that will work out. . .

Those Opposed?

Not everyone’s thrilled about this initiative. The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and other organizations have  banned together to form the Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight (CRIDO). The group feels that the program will cannibalize small and large businesses. According to its press release:

“The proposed ICANN program would permit applicants to claim virtually any word, generic or branded, as an Internet top-level domain.  Top Level Domains are everything to the right of the dot, such as .com and .org.  In the first year alone, the ICANN plan would allow hundreds of new Top Level Domains, and thousands in the future. This would strongly pressure brand owners at every level of business, including small businesses, consumers, NGOs, charities and foundations, to defensively buy and protect new top level domains.”

Are We Small Businesses Really in Danger?

While CRIDO says small businesses will be the victims in this scenario, it’s not clear whether that’s true. So many top level domains (think .net and .biz) have failed to match the popularity of .com that I don’t see us all scrambling to buy up new, more obscure gTLDs.  Large companies will certainly want to protect their brands, and can afford to do so.

As a small business owner, don’t sweat it. You might find the opportunity to get a unique top level domain, but don’t stress about buying up as many as possible. My suggestion is to keep doing what you’re doing, and let’s sit back together and see how this war ends.

Starting a Home Business? Read Barefoot Executive

Carrie Wilkerson, also known as the Barefoot Executive, didn’t set out to be an entrepreneur or small business owner. She was a high school teacher. Changes in her life circumstances “forced” her into starting a business.

This is the backdrop for her new book, The Barefoot Executive: The ULTIMATE MANUAL For Being Your Own Boss & Achieving Financial Freedom.”

Barefoot ExecutiveCarrie writes:

“When I started working at home in 1998, it was because we had adopted two toddlers and overnight, literally, I had become a mom. We had twenty-four to thirty-six hours to prepare. I was teaching high school at the time and really loved it, but this adoption adjusted my priorities instantly.

I did not start my business beacause I had a big passion for what I was doing, because I was chasing a big idea, or because I wanted to make big money. I started my business because I refused to leave my children in the care of someone else. I didn’t want them to question who their mom was and, frankly, I still needed a paycheck. Period.”

Those two paragraphs give you a vivid preview for who this book will appeal to, and the author’s approach to giving advice for those starting a new business.   This is NOT a book for high tech entrepreneurs dreaming of venture capital money and becoming the next Facebook.

This is a book for those whose goals are grounded in the realities of living, i.e., those who wish to start a business to help make a better life for their family, and to have more control over their workday.  It’s a book for those who may have lost a job or fear losing a job, and turn to entrepreneurship as a better fit for the next stage of their career.   It’s a book for those who wish to work at home … and may never want to grow their businesses beyond a certain comfortable point.

Working to Live, Not Living to Work

Carrie WilkersonI had the pleasure of meeting Carrie Wilkerson (@barefoot_exec on Twitter) last year, when we worked together on a project for Google’s Get your Business Online initiative.  Carrie is a warm, kind and giving person, who sent me a small gift of hand lotion afterwards.  It didn’t have her brand plastered all over it as a marketing ploy — it was simply hand lotion with a handwritten note.  How many people do that these days?  That kind humanness of her personality comes through very well in the book.

This is a very personal book.  It’s a business book written in the first person (“I”). You get quick snapshots of Carrie’s life and business sprinkled throughout.  She illustrates her advice by using personal examples drawn from her own experiences.  Life and business are interwoven, often in the same sentence or paragraph.  You realize that for someone like Carrie it’s impossible to separate her personal life from her business, or her business from her personal life.  Business and life are well integrated in her universe — just as they were centuries ago before the Industrial Revolution forced us to separate the two each day.

What emerges is a rich tapestry of a purpose-driven life and purpose-driven business.  This is about working to live, not living to work.

What Barefoot Executive is About

The Barefoot Executive book is part motivational book, part “how to” for business, part workbook, and part self-help. You will find advice, mistakes to avoid, case studies, short exercises for you to complete, links to videos for you to watch.

I purchased a Kindle version of this book.  The electronic version is ideal for clicking through the links to watch the videos Carrie has created for readers.  But the URLs are short enough that you can type from them in from the hard-cover version of the print book, if you prefer to read it that way.

Above all, you will get Carrie’s warm brand of confidence-building inspiration.

You get inspired with frequent quotes from famous people offered to reinforce key points — people such as Leonardo DaVinci and super-entrepreneur Mary Kay Ash.  But I get tired of reading about famous over-achievers all the time.  They can make you feel inadequate.

To combat that, Carrie includes numerous case studies of successful small business owners many of whom you probably never have heard of.  Many of  the case studies relate how they overcame great odds:  serious health issues, heavy debt, bankruptcy, lack of confidence, lack of education.  Or how they started from humble beginnings or with a modest business idea.  These case studies are all the more inspiring because they are “ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”  The reader can’t help but think, “if they could do it so can I.”  For most people it’s far more realistic and rewarding to measure success in the context of earning a comfortable income for your family — you don’t need to become a billionaire to be successful.  The case studies prove it.

Who This Book is For

The motivational and self-help portions of the book apply to any entrepreneur — anyone can get value from them.    In fact, I consider motivation and inspiration to be where this book shines.

Beyond that, the practical business advice is definitely focused towards home-based businesses, and especially:  online businesses, marketers and relationship-based businesses, solo entrepreneurs such as authors, and professional services businesses.

But what if you’re not sure what business you could start?  There’s also a very good section how how to identify a market and a business to start.  The chapter “Who Wants What You Have?” is one of the most practical discourses I’ve seen in a business book about how to identify a startup opportunity.

This is not a book for an experienced, established business owner with employees and a schooled business background.   Rather, it’s for startup newbies and those who are pretty much solo operators working from home.  If this describes you, you will get value out of this book.

I highly recommend the Barefoot Executive if you are thinking about starting a home-based business, or recently went out on your own and need a boost of inspiration and focused coaching to get to the next level.  It’s especially appropriate if your goals for starting a business are primarily to earn a comfortable living for your family, and live a good life.

Don’t Get Spooked by Starting Your Own Business

It’s that time of year when one holiday seems to follow right on the heels of another. Now that summer is wrapped up, you need to get the jack-o-lanterns, Halloween candy and costumes ready for our scariest of holidays.

scared businessman

While ghouls and goblins should frighten you on Halloween, what about starting your own business? Fear (and more specifically, the fear of failure) is one of the strongest forces preventing budding entrepreneurs from reaching their potential. It’s fear that has stopped countless great businesses before they’ve even begun.

A few simple “tricks” can help you overcome your fear of starting or growing a business:

1. Forget about perfection: To often potential entrepreneurs wait until every little detail of their business is perfected before launching. But guess what? Perfection is unattainable. So don’t wait, just go for it! So what if you’re wrong? So what if there are little glitches here and there? Just go with what you have, and build on what you learn. If you wait until your blog, product, website, etc. is perfect, you’ll never launch anything at all.

2. Really think about your worst-case scenario – is it as scary as you think? All too often, we underestimate our ability to recover from a worst-case scenario. If you start a business and fall flat on your face, how long would it take you to recover? How hard would it be to find another job or start another business venture? Would you be down for a few months, a few years? Could you handle that risk? And what’s that risk compared to a lifetime of never chasing your dream?

Of course, you, along with your family, best know your situation and your ability to assume risk. But for many, the monster hiding under the bed is not as bad as you envisioned.

3. Take steps to minimize the downside of failure: No matter your personal situation, you should always manage risk intelligently. Overcoming fear doesn’t necessarily mean you should risk losing it all. You can make the necessary preparations to minimize the downside of failure. For example, you can structure your new business so as to minimize your personal liability. You can build up an emergency fund. Or you could begin the early stages of your business while you still have a “day job.”

4. Be honest about your financing: It’s no secret that Main Street/small business lending isn’t in such great shape right now. We are seeing some venture capital coming back, but for the average small business, traditional funding from banks is still tight. This means you may have to self-finance or start small at the beginning. If you don’t have access to tons of capital, you probably shouldn’t consider launching a manufacturing company with lots of overhead, or a concept with expensive product inventory. However, it’s more than possible to start a business with just a small investment.

5. Think about what’s truly scary: Yes, starting a business can be a scary endeavor, particularly when the news paints such a troubling economic picture. But think of it this way: Never taking a chance on your dreams can be scariest outcome of all.

This fall is the perfect time to start putting a plan in motion to launch a business for the New Year. You’ve got two months to create your business plan, assemble whatever resources you need, and research your legal and tax obligations for starting a business.

So if you’ve been considering starting a business, take a deep breath and jump right in! Set a deadline with yourself (and maybe with a friend to hold you accountable) and do something that will force you into action. With every action you take, you’ll gain confidence and momentum. And who knows where this exciting entrepreneurial path will take you by next Halloween!

Why Small Businesses Aren’t Creating Jobs. Blame for why small businesses aren’t creating jobs will probably again be placed on banks that won’t lend and businesses that are hoarding cash as the President and most of Washington try to explain away high unemployment. This article goes more in depth to look at these claims examining the assets and liabilities of small businesses and their debt to eguity ratio. You might be surprised at the findings. Tech

Can small business benefit from business intelligence software? Business intelligence is nothing more than simply looking at and analyzing data so as to make better business decisions. In the past mostly larger businesses used complex programs to gather business intelligence. Today it is becoming economically feasible and can be developed for smaller businesses to help them compete with larger businesses. Each small business must evaluate their needs and weigh the ROI. Policy

Small business is focus of tax cuts. Reducing payroll taxes for employers to encourage hiring of additional employees may be a blend of policy and politics. It will certainly appeal to most small business owners enticing them to consider hiring. Many of these small business owners just happen to be independent voters, a group whose support the President desperately needs in his reelection bid. WSJ

Growth engines: ten ideas to help small businesses create more jobs. The SBA states that small businesses (under 500 employees) have created 2 out of every 3 net jobs over the past 15 years. If one out of three very small businesses (4 employees or less) added one employee we would be at full employment. How do we accomplish this?  The article emphasizes creating more customers, increasing competition, reducing costs, and increasing fair, affordable credit. Suggestions are presented on how to accomplish these ideas. Policy Shop

Walden, Wyden react to Obama jobs plan. The President in his speech to the Congress talked about the need to review the rules and regulations that hamper small businesses and to make sure they were necessary and “common sense”. This doesn’t require Congressional action. Yet, as he spoke, there were over four thousand new regulations aimed at job creators. One estimate states that the cost of regulations to U.S. businesses amounts to about 1.75 trillion dollars. What would happen to job creation for small businesses if needless regulations were eliminated. Other pro-small business government actions could further job creation for small businesses. KTVZ.com

Strategy

Business knowledge “holding back small construction firms.” Just because you are a knowledgeable person when it comes to construction doesn’t necessarily mean you will be successful in running a small construction business. It takes a completely different approach and a different way of looking at your business. You must understand how to start and how to plan and organize. Understanding finance, purchasing, employment management and production are necessities. You are no longer a builder but rather a small business manager. There are several good construction software packages available to guide you. Construction Industry News

Controlling information. How much information do you control and how much do you share with your people. It can be an important consideration in today’s small business environment where too much information could distract employees causing them to worry about things that are none of their business while too little could fuel rumors and destroy morale. So what is the proper mix when it comes to sharing information with employees? You’re the Boss

Google Plus Starting to Impact Search

Google Plus Starting to Impact Search

This content from: Duct Tape Marketing

The link between Google Plus and the impact it will have on search results is one that many people are watching closely. Google Plus is taking hold and Google’s search product is a big benefactor as millions of motivated folks are +1ing, sharing and commenting on great content they create and find.

The content creation and curation going inside of Google Plus is one of the best reasons to participate, it’s also given Google an army of content consumers to help them hand select content.

The results of some of this work are staring to show up in search. Google Plus users that are logged into their Google account while conducting searches will start to see search results from people they are connected with in Google Plus. Search while logged out and you won’t see the shared by connections link and the search results will be altered somewhat.

google plus in search

Google Plus connections are highlighted and search results altered

This isn’t really news as Google has been trying to bring social search to life for some time and shows what they think are more relevant results when you are logged in.

The difference here though is that while social search results have been around, they’ve been limited to the perhaps few dozen people you were connected with through GMail or GTalk. With Google Plus people are connecting with thousands of people already and this is changing the search experience in more noticeable ways.

So, as a content consumer, your results may differ – for good or bad – I for one don’t like the altered search results, but some may prefer them.

But, the real question is – as a content producer does a high level of participation in Google Plus give your content a better chance of ranking well in Google? For now I think the short answer is sort of. If you have lots of connections in Google Plus and share and +1 lots of content, including your own, then some of that content will start to rise higher for searches done by your connections.

As spammers send bots into Google Plus to create large connection networks this will certainly be something Google will have to evolve.

Having said that here are three recommendations I stand by:
Get into Google Plus and build a following – it’s a better tool for business networking, content discovery and content sharing than any other network currently.

Add the +1 button to your content – the +1 button is integrated into Google Plus, but it’s also a part of the overall content discovery piece in Google search and needs to go along side your Like and InShare buttons on y0ur own blog and  web pages. – I wrote a How To Add +1 Tutorial here.

Example of author highlighting in Google search

Add the rel=”author” attribute to your content – Google is attempting to find another, better way to attribute original content to the original author. They have introduced a highlighting feature that will showcase Google Profile of original authors like in the image above. You need to add the rel=author attribute to your content links, point that attribute to an About Us kind of page on the same domain and have a link on that page pointing to your Google Profile page and a link on your Google Profile page should point back to your About Us page. Yoast does a great job explaining this with this tutorial for WordPress folks here
