Changing Failure to Wins with Business Efficiency

Just because your business isn’t running as efficiently as it could doesn’t mean that you can’t tweak your procedures to turn it into a well-oiled machine. By paying close attention to where you’re wasting time and money, small changes can make a bigger difference than you ever imagined. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Records Results for Analysis

Before you make the first change, it’s important to keep a good record of the results of your current process. Without this, you’ll have no clear idea if your changes were effective. Once you identify a process that’s taking too long, make one or two changes and measure again. This practice will let you know if you’re tackling the right problems and if your changes actually worked. Once you get the hang of it, you can proceed at a faster rate.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Some people think that everything will work out if they just work harder. This sounds like common sense, but it rarely works out. Instead, find a smarter way to do things. Here’s a secret: technology can be your best friend. Little things like signing documents electronically and using an online fax service instead of printing, signing and faxing can save a tremendous amount of time.

Using a smartphone or other mobile device is another great idea. This lets you stay in touch while you’re in the field and removes the office ball-and-chain from your leg. By allowing you to take full advantage of travel time and other previously wasted opportunities, you can get a lot more done in the same amount of time.

Lunch Breaks Aren’t Taboo

Sometimes, it’s more important to know when to stop than to just work harder. By taking a break or actually going out to lunch, you give your brain a chance to recharge. It’s amazing how this habit can take a previously insurmountable task and transform it into a 10-minute no-brainer. Taking breaks during work is extremely good for your health and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Think about it like this: you only have so many hours that you can work before you start to shut down or burn out. A little off time only makes you more productive in the long run. If nothing else, take a five-minute walk and start again.

Break the Routine

People waste precious minutes everyday by waiting for the same routine things to happen. Although it doesn’t feel like much, minutes can add up to hours over the course of a day. Instead of waiting for your computer to boot up or that large document to print, do something productive with your time. Just five minutes is enough to wipe a small task or two off your to-do list.

It’s the perfect time to call an important customer, schedule that appointment or simply clean the clutter off your desk. If you’re really caught up and have absolutely nothing that has to be done, take a short walk.

Small changes can add up to large improvements when it comes to an efficient business. What will you change first?

Peter Diamond Wins Nobel, But Not Federal Reserve Seat

Federal Reserve Board nominee Peter Diamond, under whom Ben Bernanke studied; Dale Mortensen and Christopher Pissarides have won the Nobel Peace Prize in Economics. Marginal Revolution has an excellent summary of Diamond’s works. MarketWatch explains the economists’ Nobel-winning theory in layman’s terms:

Diamond, Mortensen and Pissarides reject (the economic theory that all unemployment is voluntary), arguing that it’s costly to find just the right job — that is, one that matches your skills and abilities and pays you what you are worth. From the employer’s point of view, it’s just as costly: All the applicants look pretty much the same at first; it’s not easy to tell beforehand if they can do the job, or whether you can find someone who’ll do the job for less. Searching, in sum, is costly.

The upshot of this research is that this searching — they called it “friction” — can make markets inefficient. Taking the first job offered, or hiring the first applicant would mean the economy wouldn’t work as well as it could. We’d get Ph.D.’s driving cabs, and high-school dropouts running nuclear plants.

Sometimes government policies can reduce the inefficiencies, but sometimes they can make them worse. Providing unemployment benefits can keep workers from accepting the wrong job out of desperation, but providing too many benefits can lead to search times running even longer than necessary.

The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein explains why Republican Senator Dick Shelby keeps blocking Diamond’s nomination to the Federal Reserve:

Shelby’s argument against Diamond is cover for his actual objections against Diamond. One of those objections is simple partisan politics. But another, I’ve heard, is odder: Shelby hates behavioral economics.

This White House, as has been endlessly well-known”>pointed out, is big on behavioral economics. See Peter Orszag, Jeff Liebman and Cass Sunstein for more on that. But the administration’s embrace of the discipline has provoked a response that the White House never anticipated. Republicans have grown suspicious of behavioral economics. And Diamond, it turns out, has done a fair amount of work in the field (for instance, here). Insofar as Shelby’s got an actual objection to DIamond, that’s it, and one of the things he wants is another hearing focusing on Diamond’s behavioral work.

….Diamond has published in many areas, but two particular points of expertise are labor markets and entitlement programs, both of which the Federal Reserve will need considerable knowledge of over the next few years. Without Diamond — or someone like him — on the Board, it’s no exaggeration to say they’ll be learning on the job.

The Universal Truth of Selling on the Web: Simple Wins

Universal Truth Of Selling On The Web: Simple WinsChoices are great on a menu, but too many choices on your website or landing page or even within your products can cause indecision. Too many choices can lead to confusion, and when you’re in the business of trying to make a sale, confusion is the enemy. What’s the opposite of confusion? The answer is easy. The best way to make things easy? Keep them simple.

Often we’re too focused on giving our customers too much. When you go to the barber, he doesn’t give you a menu of haircuts. You sit down, tell him simply what you’d like done, he pulls out his tools and cuts your hair. All very quickly and without fuss, which is the reason most men still prefer to go to a barber rather than a “salon”: It’s simple.

Now, if you were to sit in that same barber’s chair and he gave you a 20-question survey about what type of hairstyle you prefer before he started cutting, you’d not only be annoyed, but most likely never go to him again.

Let’s look at an online example to further prove the point. Imagine you’re visiting the e-commerce store of your favorite pet supply retailer. You need a new collar for your Labrador, Bella. Upon arriving at the site’s dog collar section, you find 20 different types and brands of collars. There are fancy collars, cheap collars, chain collars, collars for small and big dogs, collars with diamond studs on them, fashionable collars, and many more. Whew… you’re faced with lots of choices.

“Great,” you say. “I love it that this store has so many choices, I came to the right place.”

But perhaps it’s not so great. Having too many choices might be a problem. You just wanted to get a collar. You were ready to buy one. But now, well, you’ve found out that there a lot of decisions you need to make before you buy one. You think to yourself, “I had no idea there were so many collars. I like so many of them, I don’t know what to choose.”

So you didn’t buy. You were ready to, but you didn’t. Chances are this has happened to you at some point in your buying life, and chances are what happened was that you were ready to decide, but the explosion of choices either confused you, or made you realize that you weren’t ready to decide. Effective sales and marketing is all about helping the customer make a decision, and simplicity is necessary to make that happen.

Here are some ways your site might be confusing customers:

  • Poor navigation so your customer has to figure where to go
  • A poor unique value proposition (UVP)
  • Too many choices of products and services without a clear indication of which one is the right choice for the customer
  • Tons of drawn-out copy that nobody wants to read
  • Requiring a customer to register before they can buy from you

Are you guilty of overcomplicating customers’ choices on your website? Think about ways you can make it simple–and you’ll find that making the sale gets much easier.

P&G Wins Big With Old Spice Guy

You’ve probably seen the Old Spice guy
, former Seahawks wide receiver Isaiah Mustafa, online or on TV. He’s the stud featured above who embodies manly possibilities via the scent of Old Spice. Parent company Proctor & Gamble’s Old Spice ad campaign has produced several viral hits, and a solid fan base.

Today, the Old Spice guy became interactive, and P&G’s ad company must be patting itself on the back. The Old Spice guy went live on the @OldSpice twitter feed by proclaiming “Today could be just like the other 364 days you log into Twitter, Or maybe the Old Spice man shows up.” Then, he started producing custom videos for bloggers, Facebook and Youtube commenters, and people asking him questions on a variety of other online outlets.

He’s answering all questions topless, in a shower stall. Here’s an example, after Facebook user Gail Berg wrote on Facebook: “Any suggestions on finding a guy worthy to purchase Old Spice for?”

This is exciting. No wonder everyone wants to talk to the Old Spice guy (and, ahem, mention Old Spice and implant the brand into our brains). I myself had to log onto Facebook and ask him how he takes care of business. Hey, it’s worth a try, right?

I love what P&G’s agency has done with the interactive component, too. They’ve given Old Spice a face, and an attractive, responsive one at that. Users are building positive memories of interacting with Old Spice man. Those emotions will probably come up again in the supermarket aisle.

The interactive aspect also makes the brand more accessible online. I assume that Old Spice Man is making people more willing to follow the brand, sign up for news, and take part in other Old Spice marketing activities.

Consider it a major marketing win.
